ABOUT ANDY WILSON!!!
Hello. I’m Andy Wilson, I’m a published poet, copywriter, I love advertising and writing.
As a kid I watched commercials on purpose, after school I’d flick through the junk mail on the table asking myself things like “Why did they choose those words, those colors, and that picture?”
I made this website as a place to post my work and writing.
Some of what I write I hope will be helpful to others, but sometimes I will write whatever I want and post them here even if they’re not related to marketing or copywriting at all.
Truth be told, when I’m writing for clients I work hard to make everything is close to perfect.
But this is my website, not a client’s. So it’s my place to loosen up a little bit, sometimes I just want to have fun, ya know?
Since 2010 I’ve worked as a copywriter working in agencies, as a marketing lead, as a senior copywriter, and freelanced for years.
Although most of my experience has been working with small businesses or startups.
My experience has turned me into a jack of all trades, a full-stack copywriter who’s comfortable taking on any market and writing in any medium.
I’ve worked on:
-Online sales letters
-Direct mail
-Email campaigns
-Video sales letters
-PPC
-Content marketing
-Press releases
-Social media campaigns
-Community management
-Direct response marketing
-Pitch decks
-T.V. and radio commercials.
I’ve worked for a Seattle-based advertising agency where I wrote PPC ads for small businesses around the country.
I’ve worked on email campaigns that won affiliate contests earning extra money for me and my partners.
My copy has helped fill live events.
I’ve critiqued websites that were dead in the water, making no sales, and by the next evening, those websites were making sales night after night.
My pitch decks helped raise millions for a small start-up.
When canvassers put my copy around door knobs, the phone would ring with leads that evening.
What I Enjoy Besides Marketing
Poetry And Magic: the Gathering
Through 2010 - 2014 I volunteered at Everett Poetry Nite where I wrote and performed poetry every week.
I was the back-up MC and hosted some amazing award winning poets.
My work has been published in Random Access Poetics and the Ghost Mic publication. Poetry taught me not just how to write, but how to write for emotional impact.
Reading on stage taught me the difference between writing for the eye vs the ear - I take this knowledge and experience and apply it anytime I have to write a script.
I will always be grateful for the poets who challenged me and helped me grow.
A much younger Andy takes the mic.
Professional Magic: The Gathering Player
Writer & Coach
Besides writing, one of my other passions is competing in trading card game (TCG) tournaments.
When I say trading card games I mostly mean Magic: the Gathering.
These games are a mix between chess and poker. It’s like chess in the sense that you play pieces (cards) onto a board, and it’s like poker in the sense that you must calculate odds, bluff, and make accurate reads about your opponent's hand and strategy.
I have a handful of top 64, and top 32 finishes at Magic Grand Prix tournaments, which are often two day competitions with over a thousand players. I made the top 8 of the MagicFest Vegas 2021 main event (1500+ players).
I played on the Magic: the Gathering Pro Tour. Pro Tours are reserved for the world’s best players which each tournament consisting of a few hundred players. The only tournament harder than a Pro Tour is the World Championship (which I hope to qualify for in 2025). It takes a high level of skill and effort to qualify for one Pro Tour, I’ve qualified for several.
I was a co-host for the Amulet Titan podcast, which is a Magic deck. I am known as one of the best Amulet Titan players in the world.
In 2009 I had a top 32 finish at the World of Warcraft trading card game Continental Championship (like Nationals but also including Canada.) which earned me an invitation to the World Championship, where I placed in the top 64.
In my tween/early teenage years I was well known for my Yu-Gi-Oh strategy articles, although I was too young to travel to national level tournaments (even though I was qualified.)
In 2024 I qualified for two Pro Tours, and several Regional Championships, which is a national tournament every quarter for qualified players only.
At Regional Championship Dallas I placed 16th (Out of 1256 players). I was the top Temur Analyst player in the country.
In between tournaments I combined my love of writing, marketing, and Magic. I sold deck guides and paid coaching. Some of my coaching students were able to qualify for the Pro Tour themselves, and my customers who bought my deck guide said it helped them qualify as well.
Me and my teammates finishing 1st place at the Puget Sound Battleground.
Both poetry and trading card games influence my thinking and my approach to copywriting and marketing.
The poet in me is always tuning, editing, and trying to make my writing more efficient.
Like a ghost in my ear always asking “Why that word?”
And my trading card experience always thinks about how everything I write fits into an overarching strategy.
